“A little history… goes a long way.”
Forty chapters, two thousand words each.
The A Little History of… series aspires to become a guide for all of us ordinary mortals interested in the histories of exploration in different fields of human activity. They offer insight into the worlds and lives of world-famous thinkers, scientists, and artists. Moreover, they break down complex ideas and explain complicated terms simply – all in short, snappy chapters accompanied by black and white illustrations.
The foundation block of this series was the seminal work of E. H. Gombrich – A Little History of the World – originally published in 1935 and only translated into English in 2005 under the wings of Yale University Press. The content of the book and its format became so popular that it sparked an entire series, including histories of philosophy, music, literature, economy, and many more. This year’s addition is A Little History of Psychology.
And that’s the one we’re looking at today.
A Little History of Psychology by Nicky Hayes is the perfect guide through the history of this fascinating field of study, which examines questions like: What really drives our decisions? Where does language come from? Why do our minds sometimes work against us? In this book you’ll learn how the most extraordinary thinkers of the world tackled these and other questions. What did Plato, Jung or Chomsky think?
Nicky Hayes, author of the book and the president of the British Psychological Society, paid a visit to our bookshop in Prague where she introduced her new book, answered questions from curious audience members, and signed several copies. She also very kindly agreed to an interview with Anglo-American University lecturer Gerald Power. In it she talks about her journey through the field of psychology, uncovers some “backstage” information about the Yale University Press series, and last but not least, what she wants readers to gain from her book.
Enjoy!
