While traditional Gaeltacht dialects hold obvious prestige, post-traditional language practices, though not explicitly prestigious, are also widespread and valued. Linguistic diversity is, if so, closely tied to the social values associated with diversity. Both are rooted in issues of identity and in how social actors understand their own roles and the roles of others in late modernity.
