"Kanaky" (Man Land) is what the New Caledonians call their islands. It is a French protectorate and lies about 1200km from the east coast of Australia and 200km south west of Vanuatu in Melanesia. The lagoon surrounding the island of Grand Terre covers 24,000 km2 and is the largest lagoon in the world.
