Detailed information

Facial reconstruction of ancient Egyptian mummies, which has a long history, helps visualizing the appearance of ancient Egyptians. Advanced medical imaging technology produces more accurate soft tissue depth charts; upon which the major methods of facial approximation depend. Several 3D manual facial reconstruction techniques are currently used in practice. They consist of modeling a face on the skull, using clay and plasticine. On the contrary, computer systems are more faster and have a more scientific approach than traditional facial reconstruction, that require manual skills. Such systems have high levels of efficiency, objectivity and flexibility, as they depend on recent rapid advances in medical imaging and computer technology. Computerized 3D techniques allow the noninvasive study of mummified remains and widening the scope for future research. Hence, constant re-evaluation of the accuracy and reproducibility of these new systems is critical, since it will promote further improvement and increase the reliability and accuracy of reconstructions. Further comparative studies utilizing other mummys' facial reconstructions and portrait combinations are recommended.
