Detailed information

Munroe Island is located at the confluence of Ashtamudi Lake (a Ramsar site) and Kallada River, in Kollam district, Kerala. The back water channels, ponds and canals of the Island nurtures a wide variety of fish species, prawns, crabs and bivalve. The mangrove forests were also exists sparingly in the Island. Low-lying areas of the Island are now under the threat of Submergence during high tides. Sinking of Munroe Island may be due to change in climatic conditions caused by global warming, unscientific constructions, the reduced silt accumulation in the Island.Munroe Island experience prolonged flooding that does not recede easily, and results in pools of stagnant water in their fields. Commercial shrimp farming is practiced in Munroe Island. Farming systems have gradually shifted from extensive traditional systems to semi-intensive and intensive that multiplied the environmental stress to the ecosystem.
