Insects are a major threat to sustainable crop protection. Many conventional and novel chemicals are widely used by farmers in order to manage insect pests. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is today a widely accepted strategy to reduce overdependence on chemical insecticides and their potentially negative environmental and economic effects. Biotechnology has considerable potential to contribute to sustainable biological elements of IPM. However, biotechnology development to date has been directed at more conventional models for pest control technologies.
