Detailed information

Concrete is normally classified as self-compacting if it satisfies the requirements of filling ability, passing ability and resistance to segregation. Filling ability is defined as the ability of SCC to flow into and fill completely all spaces within the formwork, under its own weight. Passing ability is defined as the ability of SCC to flow through narrow spaces such as spaces between steel reinforcing bars without segregation or blocking. Segregation resistance is defined as the ability of SCC to remain homogeneous in composition during transportation and placing. Many tests have been developed in the past to characterize the properties of SCC. None of the methods has achieved universal approval. Table 1 gives some of the tests reported in literature for testing the workability of SCC. A detailed experimental investigation has been carried out on SCC to find out its filling ability, passing ability and resistance to segregation using the Slump Flow Test, J-Ring Test and V-Funnel Test respectively.
