Picturing Austrian Cinema: 99 Films/100 Comments

Ein Lese- und Bildbuch als Spiel mit Geschichte, Geschichten und was es bedeuten kann, (filmische) Zeit anzuhalten: 100 Einzelbilder aus 100 Werken von 100 österreichischen Filmemacher·innen seit 1945, jeweils beschrieben von 100 internationalen Literat·innen und Publizist·innen aus den Bereichen Kritik, Filmtheorie, Wissenschaft. Entlang eines vom Zufall der jeweiligen Bildauswahl strukturierten Timecodes entfaltet sich eine Topographie des österreichischen Kinos über die Jahrzehnte hinweg, zwischen Spielfilm, Experiment und Dokumentation. Katharina Müller, Kulturwissenschaftlerin, leitet die Abteilung Forschung, Vermittlung und Publikationen des Österreichischen Filmmuseums. Lehrveranstaltungen in Film- und Medienwissenschaft, Monografie zu Michael Haneke. Zuletzt Projekte der künstlerischen Beforschung des ephemeren Films. Claus Philipp, Publizist und Dramaturg, veröffentlichte u.a. Bücher zu Alexander Kluge, Christoph Schlingensief und Ulrich Seidl. Zuletzt u.a. Dramaturgie und künstlerische Mitarbeit beim Film- und Performanceprojekt Die Kinder der Toten (2017- 2019, Regie: Nature Theater of Oklahoma).--A book of texts and images that plays with history, stories and what it might mean to stop (cinematic) time: 100 individual frames from 100 works by 100 Austrian filmmakers since 1945, each described by 100 international writers and journalists from the fields of criticism, film theory, and science. Following along a time code structured by the happenstance of the particular image selection, a topography of Austrian cinema unfolds across the decades, shifting between feature film, experimental work, and documentary.Katharina Müller, cultural scientist, heads the Education, Research, and Publications Department at the Austrian Film Museum. She lectures on film and media studies and has written a monograph on Michael Haneke. She has recently been involved in artistic research projects studying ephemeral film. Claus Philipp, journalist and dramaturge, has produced a number of publications including books on Alexander Kluge, Christoph Schlingensief, and Ulrich Seidl. His most recent work has been as dramaturge and artistic collaborator on the film and performance project The Children of the Dead (2017- 2019, directed by Nature Theater of Oklahoma).
