Detailed information

All over the world, throughout the centuries, women have been deprived of many of their fundamental rights. Starting in the 20th century, women began to assertively claim these rights. In Brazil, this process developed slowly and gradually. In the political scenario, it was only on February 24, 1932, foreseen in the Federal Constitution of 1934, that the Electoral Code started to ensure women's vote, one of the main achievements of women in this century. In 1988, a group of outstanding women opened space for the entry and active female participation in the national political scene, being considered a landmark of civil rights in Brazil. This participation was registered in the 1988 Constitution and started an important process of women empowerment, deflating the right to gender equality. This feminine occupation in the political scene came to guarantee important legal reforms, such as the promulgation of the Maria da Penha Law, a milestone in violence against women in Brazil.
