Detailed information

Acetylcholine (Ach) is major neurotransmitter of cholinergic transmission and it act on muscarinic and nicotinic receptors. Acetylcholine esterase (AchE) is found in cholinergic neurons, more widely than cholinergic synapses and highly concentrated at the postsynaptic end plate of the neuromuscular junction. AchE also known as acetylcholine acetylhydrolase, that degrades the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, producing choline and an acetate group. It is mainly found at neuromuscular junctions and cholinergic nervous system, where its activity serves to terminate synaptic transmission.Inhibition of AchE serves as a strategy for the treatment for Alzheimer's disease (AD). There are a few synthetic choline esterase inhibitors as approved drugs are limited in use due to their adverse side-effects. In traditional practices, numerous plants have been used to treat cognitive disorders, including neurodegenerative diseases and different neuropharmacological disorders.
