Development of American Pharmacology

Though the word "pharmacology" has been used since the 17th century to refer to the study of drugs, the modern science of pharmacology did not emerge as a distinct discipline until the 19th century, when scientists primarily concerned with investigating the physiological effects of drugs began calling themselves "pharmacologists." This is the first comprehensive history of the science in the US, focusing on John J. Abel, widely regarded as the "father of American pharmacology."
