Detailed information

Media, as a discourse, are the means through which one can promote or criticize a given phenomenon. One of the issues that media spot light on is gender concerns such as the status of women in communities, as they are discriminated by their society. Studying issues related to gender is more likely to provide a social and cultural background of societies. In this regard, the aim of this book is to analyze the portrayals of Yemeni women in print Western media via the use of a critical approach to discourse analysis (CDA); namely, the Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) approach. This approach depends on the grammatical structures of the language used to make critical judgments based on Halliday's transitivity system; i.e., the functionality of language. The significance of CDA approaches arises from the notion that CDA is concerned with discussing substantial issues related to power, dominance, resistance and inequality by the study of the structures of a given discourse. In other words, CDA approaches go beyond the pure linguistic analysis, which focuses on the study of the structures of language without reference to the context of use.
